The Maths department comprises 6 core teachers and 5 non-specialists who work together to provide support and challenge for one another. Each member of the team brings a unique approach and a wealth of experience, fostering a collaborative environment where alternative perspectives and assistance are readily available when approaching mathematical problems. The department encourages curiosity among both teachers and students, aiming to cultivate a love for learning in Maths.
A research-led approach to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is highly valued within the Maths department. Staff members are encouraged to participate in Research Ed, Maths Conferences, and Maths Hub courses, enabling them to stay up-to-date with the latest pedagogical knowledge. This knowledge is then shared with the rest of the department, promoting a culture of continuous learning and improvement. The department includes active GCSE examiners who provide valuable support in understanding current marking expectations, ensuring accurate grading and offering feedback on common mistakes or misconceptions to better prepare students for their examinations.
The Maths department is on a journey towards implementing a 5-year bespoke mastery Scheme of Learning, which has already been rolled out to current Year 7 students. This collaborative effort involves other schools in the trust, facilitating the sharing of best practices and providing an exceptional Maths education for all students. Additionally, the department offers the Level 2 certificate in Further Maths as an additional qualification for more capable students at Key Stage 4.
To support effective teaching, the department has curated a comprehensive collection of centrally stored lesson resources. These resources are regularly reviewed and updated, offering teachers the opportunity to delve into the “why” and “how” of Maths as they seek the most effective ways to teach different concepts.
The Maths department embraces an open-door policy, with regular lesson observations by the Head of Department. This approach allows for immersive student learning experiences and provides valuable opportunities to witness outstanding teaching practices. The encouragement of these interactions aids in the professional development of the department, fostering a strong bond among the team members.
